Leaders are often recruiters. Understanding and following the relational rules for recruiting and retaining volunteers significantly multiplies the effectiveness of leadership in churches and other volunteer organizations. Peter Drucker says that every second American adult serves as a volunteer in America’s nonprofit sector, averaging at least three hours a week. This makes nonprofits America’s largest employer.5 Gallup reports that in 1995, 93 million Americans
